LATE SHOW NEWS began as a tribute list to "Late Show with David Letterman." There are a lot of great memories stored up in those old shows, not to mention the years that Dave hosted "Late Night," so I've accumulated various artifacts of that time and here they are.
Top Ten Lists are always popular. Here are NBC and CBS lists from 1987, 1988, 1989, 1990, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1994, and 1995 . The rest can be found on the CBS Web page.
Then there's the no-longer-updated Frequently Asked Questions list for the alt.fan.letterman newsgroup. We also tried keeping a songbook for a while. Favorite guests of "Late Show" and "Late Night" have included Crispin Glover, Harvey Pekar, Merrill Markoe, Roger Ebert, Cher, Jennifer Tilly, and of course Madonna.
Among the detritus that washed up on my beach were "Late Show" first season episode guides, "Late Show" first season credits, information and a story about Calvert DeForest, the exact words uttered by "Helen, the Foul-Mouthed Ticket Lady," and the sad story of a lad whose Stupid Human Trick fell short. I have accounts of Dave's rare prowls outside his lair: at the Emmys, on Howard Stern's show, on "Larry King Live."
Here's something on Bush and Clinton from 1992, an account of Bill Hicks's routine being expunged from a "Late Show" taping in 1993, an audience-member account, an account from someone who actually appeared on-camera, a November '94 interview with Dave, and an account of the last NBC show. Paul, shut up.
There are other interesting sites with "Late Show" episodes from 1995 onward, a ticket exchange for people holding "Late Show" passes they can't use, and this site from a true superfan.
